Over Rated, Over Priced, Over Sold, Under Performs - Chris K - Washington, D.C.
Unlike every other Suunto product I have owned, this one is a PIG! Its a poor watch. It's a poor GPS. It's an OK barometer. It's a poor compass. However, it IS all these things in a single device! I believe they simply tried to put too much into a single package, and thus sub-optimzed everything. Of the many features the device offers, the GPS is the least reliable and worst performing. Too bad, since that is the feature most desired by the purchaser. The issues are as follows:

Very slow to get a lock on GPS. As much as 45 minutes when first turned on in a new reagion.

Very slow to re-acquire GPS position, even after having had a solid lock within the previous hour. 15 to 20 minutes in open terrain and on open water with unobstructed horizon.

Frequent tracking 'drop out'

When it loses signal and drops the tracking, it stayes 'dropped'. It doesn't then re-acquire the signal

Battery performance is OK, so long as you don't use the GPS. It's dead in four hours when engage in constant GPS tracking...which by the way, it won't accomplish becasue it keeps dropping the signal.

Suunto reports that the small antenna configuration makes this so...I guess they didn't tell the folks at Garmin, because they seem to make small antennas work just fine.

Now, let's talk about case failures, rubber gasket failures, and button failures. All within the first 12 months. The front case top de-laminated...twice. The third case is still intact, mostly because I don't use the watch because it just doesn't perform. The rubber gasket that covers the actuating buttons failed due to fatigue, since you use the buttons a lot to keep the instrument tracking. And on and on it goes.

This product has probably created more bad will for Suunto than its worth. It really should be withdrawn. Save your money, or buy a nice Garmin AND a watch/barometer/compass combination. you will be ahead of the game and for a lot less money.

Worthless.. - Eddie Lee - Denver, CO
Uniqueness of this watch was the GPS feature. However, I have yet to acquire a sufficient satellite signals to use any of the functions of this watch that require GPS feature. I paid a lot of money for these features and am now only using it as a time piece. Even as an ordinary watch, I have to recharge every couple of weeks to use it. I have written to Suunto and asked to trade it in for X10 but they refused. My argument to them was that if the watch does not work as advertised, they should not market them as such. Some of us rely on these technologies with our lives..literally. Their response was that their upgraded model X10 should work better in acquiring the signals. No reasonable remedy. Maybe they produce other products that are good but based on their company policies, I will never purchase another Suunto product again but will be a living negative advertisement of their products. I would give "negative" stars if I could. Way to go Suunto...

Garmin Forerunner 301 GPS Personal Training Device

Garmin Forerunner 301 GPS Personal Training Device Review

I have been wanting to purchase a Garmin Forerunner. I looked at all the different units available and compaired different evaluations on all the Forerunners from a different website and saw that overall this unit was rated highly by its users. I LOVE this GPS!!!

So far - ease of use, the features offered are easy to access, and this product included a CD to load the proper program on my computer. The sync process is easy and the graphics on the program show me where I need to improve. I haven't utilized the heartrate monitor yet so I will not be rating this.

Overall I am very please with the Garmin Forerunner 301.

The Forerunner 301 offers a wide variety of training features that can help you train at any level you choose.

Included Training Center software allows you to store and analyze data using interactive graphs. View larger.
The easy-to-use, two-piece system consists of the wrist unit and a digital heart rate transmitter that you wear around your chest. The transmitter is coded that so there is no interference from other heart rate monitor users nearby. The 301 unit continuously monitors heart rate, speed, distance, pace, and calories burned. A heart rate zone chart, included with the manual, helps you target specific heart rate zones for optimal training. The unit's built-in alerts help you maintain those heart rate zones. For those who don't want to fuss with the charts, there's an AutoLearn feature that allows the unit to learn your maximum heart rate and set zones accordingly. Pace, time, distance, interval workout, and advanced custom workout alerts are also included. Meanwhile, the AutoPause feature pauses and resumes the training timer based on a specified speed. Finally, the AutoLap feature records lap data when you reach a specified distance. Don't worry about running out of room for your lap data; the unit boasts a 5,000-lap memory.

Like the Forerunner 201, the 301 also doubles as a basic navigator. You can mark your starting point as a specific location, see your current position on the plotter display, and follow an electronic breadcrumb trail back to your starting point. The built-in GPS receiver provides highly accurate data, and there's no calibration required. Just turn it on and go.

The unit's USB data port means that connecting the unit to your computer is easier than ever. The USB connection offers fast and reliable data transmission to any USB-equipped PC. And because analyzing workout data is an important tool in reaching one's fitness goals, the 301 comes with Garmin Training Center software, which allows you to download workout data to your PC for detailed analysis. View data for each workout, including your heart rate, time, distance, speed, path traveled, and altitude. You can also track data for multiple sports and multiple users, and you can overlay workout data onto a map. Brunton 27 LU Compact Pin-On Mirrored Compass With Luminous Points & Sun Watch

Brunton 27 LU Compact Pin-On Mirrored Compass With Luminous Points & Sun Watch Review

This compass is small enough to fit in a watch pocket, yet it's easy to read and accurate, within its size limits. It's marked in five degree increments, white print on black, and has luminous dots in all the right places. It's not built to do pinpoint triangulation, but it takes up no room in a belt pack and dependably gets me back to my car after a day hike.

I actually use the pin-on feature: It keeps me on line on archaeological survey transects, and I can have both hands free.

This is the same design as the old Swedish Silva 27. I was happy to see that my new Brunton 27 still says "Made in Sweden".

Timex Ironman T5G311 Midsize Bodylink System Heart Rate Monitor Watch Review

This monitor/watch is a fun tool to track heart rate and speed/distance. My only complaints are that it takes an excessive amount of time to link up to a GPS and the display is pretty small because there is so much information on it. Watch fits great and HR rate monitor is reliable but GPS technology needs some refining.

Combining speed-and-distance data with heart rate monitoring, the svelte Timex Ironman Triathlon Bodylink System (model T5G311) is a great choice for serious and professional runners, providing accurate speed and distance information as well as heart rate feedback. This mid-sized watch offers a hardened resin case with a silver bezel mounted atop a two-tone gray resin strap with a thin, tapered profile. This Speed and Distance system will track your speed (real-time, average, and maximum), pace (real-time, average, and best), and overall distance. This model also offers target alarms that will notify you when you reach preset upper and lower limits for either speed or distance. This watch also provides:

    • 3-line customizable display
    • Summary Mode: review speed, distance and heart rate performance data at end of workout
    • 100-hour chronograph with either lap/split in large digits,
    • 100-lap memory with recall of Bodylink system data

    • 100-hour, 3-mode countdown timer
    • 5 alarms for daily, weekday, weekend or weekly with 5-minute backup
    • Up to 2 year battery life
    • Included bike mount

The Indiglo night-light uniformly lights the surface of the watch dial using patented blue electroluminescent lighting technology. It uses less battery power than most other watch illumination systems, enabling your watch battery to last longer. The Night Mode feature allows you to illuminate the Indiglo night-light for 3 seconds with any button press, regardless of the mode or function. The watch is water resistant to 50 meters (165 feet)--suitable for swimming but not for diving--and the GPS sensor is splash resistant. All Timex heart rate monitor sensors have batteries that can be replaced by consumers without requiring them to be returned to the manufacturer.

GREAT FOR THE PRICE - Jonathan D. Williamson - SAN DIEGO
THIS ONE DOES IT ALL. GREAT SIZE (SMALLER FOR WOMEN)AND VERY FUNCTIONAL. EVERYTHING WORKED AS ADVERTISED AND I AM VERY PLEASED WITH IT. I HOPE THE NEXT VERSION KEEPS THIS QUALITY AND PRICE.

Nice watch but GPS is shaky - Michael Iacovelli - Philly
I bought this for my wife as she was training for a 10 mile run. I have had success with Iron Mans, plus it was a petite watch with powder blue accents - perfect for a woman, and not some big thing she'd have to wear on her wrist. Watch and heart rate monitor worked great, but the GPS function was shaky - it dropped out and did not register the distance correctly. I returned the product and the rep told me that this model has been out for a while. I am thinking there is newer technology, and I hope Timex comes out with an updated model.

Polar RS300X G1 Heart Rate Monitor Watch with G1 GPS Sensor (Black)

Polar RS300X G1 Heart Rate Monitor Watch with G1 GPS Sensor (Black) Review

I bought this watch about six months ago and have been pretty happy overall with its performance. I also bought the Flowlink along with the watch (and GPS arm band), but I have yet to use it because of the hassle of downloading the Polar software from its website. Even without being to download my workouts, I still take pleasure in using the watch and GPS. It has been invaluable to know what my pace and distance have been, although I'm not sure if the speeds, and therefore distances, are totally accurate. I say this because I have run with my boyfriend who has a Garmin with built in GPS and his watch says that we're going slower than mine does. Regardless, it gives me an idea of where I'm at.

The only issues that I have had with the watch have been one, if you accidentally hit your arm against something while not intending to exercise, you can start the timer. Two, while running in lightly wooded areas (big paths cut between fairly dense trees) the watch will lose satellite connection and will beep at you until it finds them again. I have found that turning the GPS off and then back on again seems to work. Of course, you have to stop and fumble around with it, but that's what it is. Issue three is the fact that the chest belt transmitter sometimes loses the ability to "talk" to the watch while working out. I have found that before each workout, one really needs to wipe down the chest strap (warm water) before starting. Like the instructions say, the strap needs to be moistened before working out anyhow, but a good wipedown is essential to have uninterrupted transmission for the duration of your workout.

A smart, intuitive training computer for runners and cross-training athletes, the Polar RS300X G1 wrist heart rate monitor helps you to train at the right intensity with personal training zones. This version of the RS300X comes with Polar's G1 GPS sensor, which provides speed/pace and distance measurement for outdoor sports such as running or cycling. It's a great choice for those who mix up their training regimen with cycling, inline skating, paddling, mountain biking or hiking.

The RS300X helps you to train at the right intensity with personal training zones.

This RS300X G1 comes with the G1 GPS Sensor.
Additionally, the RS300X G1 is compatible with the separately available S1 foot pod, which accurately measures your running speed/pace and distance. Committed runners will find the most value in the real-time pace and distance measurement of the S1 foot pod. And even though it attaches to your shoe laces, it's so light that you'll forget it's even there, which means it won't affect your running performance. This package comes with the Polar WearLink+ 31 coded transmitter (with changeable battery).

    Polar RS300X Models
    • Basic RS300X
      -- black and orange
    • RS300X SD with S1 foot pod for real-time pace/distance

The RS300X G1 enables athletes to train at the right intensity and improve their performance through core metrics such as heart rate, speed, distance, pace, and calorie burn. Advanced features include Polar's exclusive OwnZone feature for individualized zone training by heart rate or pace, a fitness test, and auto lap splits, which display average heart rate, pace and distance per lap. Athletes can easily review up to 16 past workout files to check their progress and ensure they're staying on track with their fitness or training plan.

    Features include:

    • Heart rate displayed as percentage of maximum heart rate, BPM, and average heart rate of total exercise
    • Tracks your latest 16 training sessions and your last 16 weeks of training
    • Visual and audible alarm in target zones: Informs you every time your heart rate and/or speed/pace exceeds the upper limit or falls below the lower limit of your target zone during a training session.
    • Polar OwnIndex Fitness Test calculates aerobic fitness (comparable to maximal oxygen uptake, VO2max) providing a reference to base training intensity and measure improvement.
    • Polar OwnCal: Shows your energy expenditure during one exercise session as well as your accumulated kilocalories during several exercise sessions. Because the OwnCal tracks both the energy expenditure during one exercise session and the accumulated kilocalories during a longer time e.g. one week, it helps in achieving both short term and long term goals.
    • Time in Target Zone feature calculates the amount of total training time spent in your personal target zone. You can use this feature together with the Total Exercise Time to determine the effectiveness of your training program.
    • Number of laps - 99
    • Watch features: alarm with snooze, dual time zone, stopwatch
    • Compatible with Polar FlowLink (available separately)
    • Water resistant to 50 meters
    • Backlighting, display zoom
    • Event Countdown Timer: Keeps your motivation high by showing how many days are left before your next running event (e.g., Berlin 23 days).

    About Polar
The first EKG accurate wireless heart rate monitor was invented by Polar back in 1977 as a training tool for the Finnish National Cross Country Ski Team. The concept of "intensity training" by heart rate swept the athletic world in the eighties. By the 1990s, individuals were looking to heart rate monitors not only for performance training needs, but also for achieving everyday fitness goals. Today, the same concept of heart rate training is being used by world-class athletes as well as everyday people trying to lose weight. Polar is the leading brand among consumers, coaches, and personal trainers worldwide and the company is committed to not only producing the best products, but also being the leading educator on the benefits of heart rate based exercise.

I am a lover of polar products. this is my third one. It is nothing like the top line products like the various Garmin devices. It lacks some of the functions in previous devices at that price range like calories and time of day during exercise. but it is good to use when running in the park or the gym.

Suunto X10M Wrist-Top GPS Computer Watch with Altimeter, Barometer, Compass, and GPS Review

I used this watch for 2 weeks in the outback. It was charged in the U.S. before the trip. Battery lasted for all two weeks on full charge, even though I kept playing with it and trying out most of the settings in Australia. Got signal even under trees, of course, no dense jungles in the outback. Temperature ranged from 35C (120F) daytime to 8C (44F) nighttime.

At home, in the temperate U.S. zone, did I not get any signal in my office building (30 ft from nearest windows, two stories below top of building. At my apt, did not get all the satellites since I faced only northeast direction. Close to the window, however, the watch received about 6 or so.

Had fun using the watch for those two weeks, but it's so obviously built for men (non-flexible portion of watch measures 2.5") that I'll probably never use it again unless in the wilderness.

    Specifications

Small and lightweight, the Suunto X10M wrist-top computer watch combines an altimeter, barometer, compass, and GPS navigator, making it a terrific companion for outdoor enthusiasts of all stripes. The X10M--which builds on Suunto's decade of experience in creating cutting-edge outdoor devices--stands above most other wrist-top computers thanks to its improved, faster GPS fixes. Even under heavy foliage, you can use the X10M to plot your treks, navigate to a certain spot, or get back to your car, all while keeping your hands free to hold a hiking stick or water bottle. Once back at home, you can share your treks on Google Earth, or use the Suunto Trek Manager PC software to create new routes and plan new journeys.

The Suunto X10M also includes a built-in altimeter, which displays your current altitude and your vertical ascent and descent rate. Accurate to within 30,000 feet, the altimeter is an extremely valuable tool for mountaineering, backcountry skiing, and wilderness travel. The altimeter contributes to your excursion in several ways. If you're standing on or near an obvious geographic feature, such as a ridge, trail, or creek, the altimeter can alert you to your current elevation and help you find your position on a topographic map. Similarly, if you plan on climbing a slope to a certain elevation and then traversing, the X10M can help you stay on course. And, of course, the X10M captures all your altitude information in its integrated logbook, making it easy to analyze your performance when creating a training routine.

The Suunto X10M watch includes an altimeter, barometer, compass, and GPS navigator.
The X10M's barometer, meanwhile, measures and records air pressure to help you predict changing conditions--from sunny skies to hair-bending electrical storms. The barometer helps you decide whether to bring a soft shell or rain shell jacket when the skies look ominous, or even when to high-tail it back to the car. In general, low pressure brings inclement weather, while high pressure brings stability and clear skies. If you've arrived at camp and notice the pressure starting to plunge, it's probably a good idea to secure the tent and crawl in. Likewise, if you're on a climb, it would be prudent to find shelter and retreat. Even at home, the X10M's barometer can look beyond office walls, skyscrapers, and nearby hills to help you plan for upcoming activities.

And no outdoor watch is worth its salt without a digital compass, a great tool for keeping track of your direction while skiing, hiking, or exploring a new city. Simply point the top of the watch toward your intended destination and lock it in. Other features include an Activity Mode that records your speed, distance, and altitude information, along with any memory points you define along the way; a Track Back mode that guides you back the same way you came; a long-lasting battery; up to 50 routes, 25 tracks, and 500 waypoints; water-resistance up to 330 feet; and all the standard watch functions, including a 12/24-hour display, a stopwatch, a calendar clock, and three daily alarms. As with all Suunto wrist-top computers, the X10M carries a two-year warranty.

    About Suunto
Suunto was founded in 1936 by outdoors man and a keen orienteering enthusiast, Tuomas Vohlonen, who had long been bothered by a problem: the inaccuracy of traditional dry compasses and their lack of steady needle operation. Being an engineer with an inventive turn of mind, he discovered and patented the production method for a much steadier needle, better readings, and a new level of accuracy.

By 1950 the company was exporting compasses to over 50 countries around the world, including Canada and the United States. In 1952, Helsinki was hosting the Olympic Games, and the torches carried to light the Olympic flame were Suunto products. The next step was improving the stability and accuracy of marine compasses. The first marine compass, the Suunto K-12, was launched onto the market in 1953. In 1957, Suunto started manufacturing hypsometers, which measure the height of trees.

In the 1960s, the compass range grew further and Suunto introduced its first diving compass--initiated by the divers themselves. A British sports diver attached a Suunto compass to his wrist and found that the device also worked underwater. Thanks to his feedback and initiatives, the new business category was found. Suunto's exports and business grew steadily and Suunto then focused on combining its strength in precision mechanics with new skills in electronics. Accuracy, reliability, and ruggedness have been Suunto's key values from the very beginning of the company history.

Today, Suunto is a leading designer and manufacturer of sports instruments for training, diving, mountaineering, hiking, skiing, sailing, and golf. True to its roots, Suunto is today the world's biggest compass manufacturer. Prized for their design, accuracy and dependability, Suunto sports instruments combine the aesthetics and functionality of watches with sport-specific computers that help athletes at all levels analyze and improve performance. Headquartered in Vantaa, Finland, Suunto employs more than 500 people worldwide and distributes its products to nearly 60 countries. The company is a subsidiary of Helsinki-based Amer Sports Corporation with the sister brands Wilson, Salomon, Atomic, Precor, and Mavic.

    X10 M A Great Watch for Military - C. Gray - Somewhere
I have recently ordered this watch after great reviews from friends. The watch does have a few flaws, such as the front cover plate falling off after a few months use, but if you go to the Suunto forums, there is a fix for this, I used it and have had no problems.

I have been using the GPS in MGRS mode and have had better than expected results. The track log is very accurate and downloads easily to Google Maps, which is great for archiving your movements. For the size of the GPS it is extremely accurate. I would never use this to call for fire, but definitely a great backup for hiking, emergency's or just verifying distance.

Garbage - Michael E. Thomsen - Davenport, IA USA
I owned a Vector for at least 10 years and am having to go back to it as Suunto has had my X 10 more than I have over the last 8 months. I have sent it in twice the last time in Nov for the case coming apart. First time button cover came off. Cannot believe I paid 0 for this. Makes me question Suunto.
